As part of our 2019 Community Summit, Confronting the Disinformation Age, Innovations in Research brings the works of SFU researchers outside of the walls of academic institutions and into their communities.

Check out Juan Pablo Alperin, Esteban Morales, and Michelle La of the Scholarly Communications Lab at SFU, as they explain how existing incentive structures for university faculty prioritize knowledge creation while actively discouraging the public sharing of that knowledge. Drawn from a representative sample of North American universities, their analysis of hundreds of documents that govern faculty career advancement explores and explains what activities and outputs are valued in academia, and how rhetorical strategies are used to stifle publicly-oriented work.
